Exercise Stress Test
An Exercise Stress Test (EST) measures and records your heart's electrical activity whilst under increasing levels of workload.
What is the test for?
People are referred for a variety of reasons:
- Investigation of chest pain or breathlessness
- The capacity to undertake physical activities or occupation
- The assessment of prognosis following heart problems
- The effect of treatment on symptoms
How is the test performed?
A treadmill is utilized for the Stress Test. Commencing at a gentle walking pace, workload is increased at regular intervals with increases in speed and slope of the treadmill.
Will I feel safe?
Yes – your heart rate and blood pressure will be monitored and an electrocardiogram (ECG) will be performed. The cardiologist will be present.
How long will it take?
Approximately 30 mins
Is there any preparation required?
You should wear comfortable walking shoes and loose fitting clothing that allows access to the front of your chest.
Chest hair may need to be shaved to allow the electrodes to adhere to the skin and can be performed on the day if needed.
When will I know the results?
The cardiologist will provide you with the results at the end of the test and the report will be sent to your referring doctor.
Please bring the following to your appointment
