Transoesophageal Echocardiogram
Transoesophageal echocardiography (TOE) is a procedure looking at heart structures from the oesophagus (food pipe) using an ultrasound probe.
What is the test for?
In certain instances the echocardiogram of the chest does not provide enough detail of the heart.
The TOE probe is thin and flexible – it is placed down your oesophagus.
It can get much closer to your heart, providing more in depth and detailed images for the cardiologist.
How long will it take?
Approximately 60 mins
Is any preparation required?
You will be provided with detailed instructions prior to your appointment which include the need to fast for 6 hours prior to the test and avoid specific activities following the test.
When will I know the results?
The doctor present during the test may briefly discuss the results. The results will be discussed in detail at a follow up appointment. The report will be sent to your referring doctor.
Please bring the following to your appointment
- Medicare card
- Any concession or health insurance cards
- A current referral from your GP or specialist (if not already provided)
Fees apply and full payment is expected on the day of the test.
